When I found the photo above it brought a smile to my face as remembered the story Phyllis had told me...
As any enthusiastic business owner, Phyllis wanted to "dress things up", so she planted some sunflowers around the tree next to the sidewalk in front of the shoppe. They started to bloom several weeks later and looked so beautiful that she had to take a picture. It really set her place apart from the other business's on Arendell Street and tied in so well with the flower-power stickers inside and on the window outside her shoppe.

Yesterdaze Closet ad appeared in the 1996 Millbrook Highschool yearbook.Special thanks to Emma Braaten (Millbrook Media Center) for finding this!
On September 29, 1995 Sherry White, the Entertainment Editor of the Carteret County News Times, interviewed Phyllis about Yesterdaze Closet (photos by Catherine Whittenburg). The article totally captures Phyllis's philosophy of life...she was always learning and growing from her experiences, and for those who knew her, she would jump at the chance to share her experiences with anyone who would listen. Phyllis told me several times that there always seemed to be a hurricane on her birthday (August 27th).

The last year of her life was no exception. On August 27th, 2011 she was so ill and could hardly move from the couch when Hurricane Irene struck the coast leaving over a million people without electricity. Back on August 27th, 1999 Hurricane Dennis was still offshore and had just been upgraded to a category 2 status. The storm hit the outer banks on August 30th. An interesting article appeared August 31, 1999 Sun Journal (New Bern). It told of the damage along the coast and mentioned the Jim Morrison sign in front of Phyllis's shoppe:
"In Morehead an empty grain silo on U.S.70 blew down, and the Sanitary Fish Market lost it's awning and some roof. Down the road at the 60s/70s Museum, a plywood cutout of the late rocker Jim Morrison took a ride on the storm." |
